PFA vs PTFE vs FEP: A Practical Material Selection Guide

Compare PFA, PTFE and FEP through processing, geometry and operating requirements rather than a universal ranking.

Compare materials. Define the requirements.

01

Begin with the processing route

PFA and FEP are melt-processable fluoropolymers. PTFE typically uses different fabrication routes, including compression molding followed by sintering, or paste extrusion for suitable fine-powder grades. This distinction affects equipment, tooling and the shapes that can be produced. A material comparison should therefore begin with how the part will be manufactured, not just a list of headline properties.

02

Compare under equivalent conditions

Review the relevant grades at the intended temperature, chemical exposure and mechanical load. Electrical data also depend on test conditions and specimen thickness. A value from one material sheet cannot automatically be compared with a value measured differently on another. Where flexibility, pressure containment or dimensional control is critical, include the finished part in the evaluation. No material is the preferred choice for every design.

03

Make a shortlist you can test

Document the required geometry, manufacturing process and service conditions. Compare candidate data sheets, identify missing evidence, then plan processing trials and component tests. Cost evaluation should include fabrication, inspection and qualification needs as well as resin price. Ask Everflon about the PFA grades relevant to your process without assuming a direct equivalent to an unrelated supplier grade.

Frequently asked questions

Can a resin data sheet confirm finished-part suitability?

A technical data sheet supports initial selection. It does not establish a pressure rating, service life or approval for a finished component. Evaluate the processed part under representative conditions.

What information should I send to Everflon?

Share the application, manufacturing process, part drawing or dimensions, operating conditions and required documentation. This helps define an appropriate grade evaluation and sample plan.

Use the current grade-specific technical data sheet and safety data sheet. Numerical properties, processing settings and approvals must match the actual grade and test conditions.
