PFA for Chemical Fluid Handling: Five Conditions to Evaluate
Evaluate PFA fluid-contact materials with fluid composition, temperature, pressure, stress and exposure history.
Define the fluid. Evaluate the conditions.
Identify the fluid and temperature
Record each chemical, its concentration and any mixture, cleaning fluid or process change. Include normal and peak temperatures. Broad chemical resistance is a useful material characteristic, but it does not replace compatibility evaluation under the actual conditions. A room-temperature observation cannot automatically support a higher-temperature application.
Add pressure, stress and time
Record pressure and changes during operation, including relevant transients. Explain supports, connections, loading and the exposure duration. Repeated cleaning, thermal cycling and mechanical movement may introduce different demands from a steady laboratory exposure. These factors belong in the component evaluation together, not as unrelated checks.
Evaluate the complete fluid-contact component
A tube, valve part or lining includes geometry and interfaces that resin data cannot fully describe. Define acceptance criteria and representative tests before committing to a material. Send the operating information to Everflon to discuss candidate grades and the documents available. Avoid specifying a pressure rating or service life from a general PFA description.
Selection checklist
| Evaluation factor | Information to record |
|---|---|
| Manufacturing process | Describe extrusion or molding equipment, tooling and the intended production route. |
| Part geometry | Record wall thickness, dimensions, tolerances and critical features. |
| Operating environment | Specify fluid composition, temperature, pressure, exposure time and mechanical loads. |
| Acceptance criteria | Define the finished-part tests, required documentation and evaluation milestones. |
Frequently asked questions
Can a resin data sheet confirm finished-part suitability?
A technical data sheet supports initial selection. It does not establish a pressure rating, service life or approval for a finished component. Evaluate the processed part under representative conditions.
What information should I send to Everflon?
Share the application, manufacturing process, part drawing or dimensions, operating conditions and required documentation. This helps define an appropriate grade evaluation and sample plan.
Use the current grade-specific technical data sheet and safety data sheet. Numerical properties, processing settings and approvals must match the actual grade and test conditions.
