High-Purity PFA: Evaluating Extractables and Contamination
Understand the evidence needed to evaluate high-purity PFA, from extractables testing to packaging and traceability.
Purity needs evidence.
Define what purity means for the system
A high-purity application needs a stated contamination target. Identify the relevant substances, process fluid, detection methods and acceptance limits. General chemical resistance or low moisture absorption does not establish low extractables. The assessment must relate to the resin grade and the conditions under which the fluid-contact component will operate.
Ask for test conditions, not just a label
Review extraction medium, temperature, time, sample preparation and analytical method. Metal-ion and other extractables data are meaningful only with those conditions and detection limits. General-purpose PFA 403, 410 or 420 should not be relabeled as semiconductor-grade material. Discuss the relevant Everflon high-purity family and its available documentation separately.
Follow cleanliness through the supply chain
Packaging, handling, processing and assembly can all affect the final result. Evaluate traceability and cleanliness practices alongside the resin information. Validate the finished component in a representative system. If specific evidence is not available, define the missing tests rather than assuming that a high-purity designation proves suitability for the application.
Selection checklist
| Evaluation factor | Information to record |
|---|---|
| Manufacturing process | Describe extrusion or molding equipment, tooling and the intended production route. |
| Part geometry | Record wall thickness, dimensions, tolerances and critical features. |
| Operating environment | Specify fluid composition, temperature, pressure, exposure time and mechanical loads. |
| Acceptance criteria | Define the finished-part tests, required documentation and evaluation milestones. |
Frequently asked questions
Can a resin data sheet confirm finished-part suitability?
A technical data sheet supports initial selection. It does not establish a pressure rating, service life or approval for a finished component. Evaluate the processed part under representative conditions.
What information should I send to Everflon?
Share the application, manufacturing process, part drawing or dimensions, operating conditions and required documentation. This helps define an appropriate grade evaluation and sample plan.
Use the current grade-specific technical data sheet and safety data sheet. Numerical properties, processing settings and approvals must match the actual grade and test conditions.
